Orthodontics is the field of dentistry focused on treating badly-aligned teeth or jaws using either braces & wires (transparent or metal) or clear aligners in order to set them into their correct places.
Steps of Orthodontic treatment:
• Evaluation: Making impressions and taking photographs and several X-rays to document the relationship of the teeth and to analyze the bone structure.
• Braces: Attaching orthodontic brackets to the teeth and passing an orthodontic wire through them. This wire has a tendency to return to its original shape, causing it to exert constant pressure on unaligned teeth. Some patients worry about the metallic look of regular braces, so Bloom Dent Team offers white braces (invisible) to ensure their comfort and satisfaction.
• Follow-up: A stronger wire is placed into the brackets every month, causing teeth to continue moving. In cases where there is not enough space for teeth movements to continue, some of the back teeth may be removed to create space.
• Elastics: After upper and lower teeth are aligned, the dental arches may need some alignment for the bite (the position in which the upper teeth fit into the lower teeth). This is done through using orthodontic elastics, attached to both arches at the same time.
• Maintenance: After the treatment is complete, soft retainers are used all the time (except during eating) for up to a year, after which the patient may wear the retainer only at night.
Pre-orthodontic appliances:
Colored or transparent rubber appliances that apply pressure on a child’s bone, helping in the growth of the dental bone, ensuring that there will be enough bone to accommodate all teeth later on in life. They may also eliminate the need for more expensive and extensive orthodontic treatments.
Accelerated orthodontics:
While the traditional orthodontic treatment removes one or more of the back-teeth, this new technique reduces widths of anterior teeth to give faster results.
• Advantages: requires less time, and reduces the need for extractions.
• Disadvantages: Teeth shapes are altered. An itching sensation in gums may accompany the treatment, as the teeth move much faster than traditional braces.
